In this post, we will see how can you block unwanted applications running in background on your phone. Sometimes you don't want any app on your phone running in background and want to stop or kill it. Microsoft Windows Phone 8 comes with app settings where you can specify permission for individual application to allow it to remain active in background or not.

Here are the steps to block an application to perform background tasks.

Step 1: Go to 'SETTINGS' screen by tapping on 'SETTINGS' tile or from application menu.

Step 3: From the 'applicatons' screen, tap on 'background tasks' as shown in the screenshot. You will see a list of applications with their status whether they are allowed to do background tasks or blocked. Search for the application you are interested to block. From next time onwards, WhatsApp will not be able to perform any background tasks.

To unblock or allow the application to run in background, you follow the same steps to reach the 'Background Tasks' screen for an application and check "Turn background tasks back for this app the next time I open it" . Once you do that and launch the application again, it will again be able to perform background tasks and will show the status as 'allowed' in background tasks screen.
